WASHINGTON Sunday May 11, 2014 (S2N Media) - After 32 months of closure and construction resulting from the August 2011 East Coast area earthquake, the Washington Monument is set to reopen.
Damage from the 2011 quake required more than 150 cracks in the 555-foot obelisk's white marble be repaired.
In 2013,488 lamps restored the monument's glow during its restoration as sensors lit the scaffolded monument automatically each night at dusk. Tourist could look but they couldn't touch.
Public tours of the 555 feet 5 1/8 inches tall marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss structure reopens at 1 p.m. Monday May 12, 2014.
